What is the difference between a parked and an addon domain?

An add-on domain is a directory under your main hosting account, however it appears as a completely separate and unrelated website when it is accessed via its URL. To add an add-domain to your account, you will need to log into cPanel. Then look under the "Domains" section for the "Add-on Domains" icon. Once you click on that you will fill out the following information:

  • New Domain
  • Subdomain/FTP Username
  • Document Root - This fills in automatically.
  • FTP Password

However, please note that in order to create an add-on domain with Holdfire, this domain will need to point to our nameservers. If a domain is not using our nameservers you will receive an error from cPanel, and will not be allowed to add the domain.

A parked domain is almost literally "parked" on top of your main domain name. This allows you to tie in several domain names that can be accessed in lieue of your "maindomain.com." So if you've got maindomain.net, and maindomain.org you may add those as parked domains. When you access either maindomain.net or maindomain.org, you are actually accessing maindomain.com.

An add-on domain is for you if you require a new domain to be added to your existing cPanel account. A parked domain is for you if you want to simply add other domains to access your main domain from.
