How do I generate an SSL certificate and CSR (Certificate Signing Request)?

Unfortunately, if you are a shared account client, you will not be able to do this. You will need to submit a support ticket, and we will do this for you, if you are interested in setting up an SSL cert (https) for your website.

In WHM (Web Hosting Manager), you will need to select the link to "Generate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request."

  1. Email Address: The email address that you will enter, will be the email address that the private key and CSR are sent to.
  2. Host to make cert for: This is the domain name (or subdomain) that you will be applying the SSL to. Please be specific, as www will only work when the domain is accessed via www. For exmaple, if I try going to https://domain.com, but I set it up for www.domain, the SSL will not work. The SSL will also apply to any directories under the domain. So if you've got /signup/ that you would like to have secured, accessing it via https://www.domain.com/signup/ will be encrypted.
  3. Country/State/City: Enter in the information of where your business (or you) are located in. Make sure that you spell out your city and state, rather than use abbreviations. So if you're from Illinois, you need to write out Illinois, and not IL. If you are an international user, enter in your country in the State field.
  4. Company Name: This is the name that will be associated with your certificate. So if your design website is called "Sunny Designs," you may use "Sunny Designs" for your company name.
  5. Company Division: This is a department that is related to the SSL certificate. So if you're using the certificate for your billing center, you can enter in "Sunny Designs Billing."
  6. Email: This email address will be the address used to associate with your SSL ceriticate.
  7. Password: Make sure that you use a password that you can remember, as this will apply to various elements that SSL companies use.

Here is an example of a CSR:
Email Address the Cert will be sent to: myemail@your-domain.com
Host to make cert for: your-domain.com
Country (2 letter Abbrivation): US
State: Illinois
City: Chicago
Company Name: Your Domain Hosting
Company Division: Your Domain Billing
